From the common folk to local celebrities, black magic, colloquially known as ilmu hitam, can take anyone under its spell.

A lecturer at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia suggested that a forensics team can be heavily involved in the tracking of victims and assailants since black magic is known to use pieces of DNA such as hair, saliva and clothing.

The most feared upon form of black magic called santau is one of the deadliest forms, since it is known to inflict great harm on its victims, some leading to death or even suicide.

According to Professor Dr Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmood, santau affects victims throughout their entire lifespan and it cannot be treated with modern medicine.

Therefore, he believes enactments based on Syariah law can be implemented in order to reprimand the assailants in a way that better fits the crime.

For witnesses on the stand, experts at black magic can be called to shed insight on how the witchcraft works.
