Released on Bail Only To Be Arrested Again, Woman in Standup Comedy Debacle Now Detained by JAWI
Previously, JUICE reported that a woman and her boyfriend were crowdfunding to pay for their bail after being arrested for disrespecting Islam.
After successfully paying her bail at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex which was set at RM20,000, Siti Nuramira Abdullah was released earlier today.
While the woman probably left a sigh of relief, misfortune struck twice as officers from the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) arrested her again upon her release.
The lady’s attorneys, Ramesh NP Chandran and R Sivaraj were speaking to the religious enforcement authorities as at least eight Jawi personnel were observed surrounding the woman, ready to make an arrest.
The religious authorities, as per Ramesh’s statement to the press, would be making an arrest of his client tomorrow or the day after in an effort to bring charges against her before the Syariah court.
According to an article in The Vibes dated July 15, Siti Nuramira may face separate charges in the Syariah court for allegedly insulting Islam under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997, which is an offence punishable by a fine of up to RM3,000 or two years’ imprisonment.
Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, the deputy minister for religious affairs in the prime minister’s office, verified the news to The Vibes’ sister site Getaran.
Siti Nuramira Abdullah’s crowdfunding efforts were successful in releasing her at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, but her fate with the Syariah court is not yet sealed.
Last week, Siti claimed trial before the sessions court for inciting disharmony among Muslims as a result of her 2-minute performance onstage at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in TTDI.
