If you grew up in the late ’90s and early 2000s, you were probably glued to your TV playing a bunch of games on the original PlayStation (or PS1 as most people call it). And if you happened to be one of those kids, you’re highly likely to have played a game called Spyro the Dragon.

In it, you play as (you guessed it) Spyro, a purple dragon whose mission is to venture the Dragon World in search of his missing dragon friends. But along the way, you’ll have to recover all their stolen treasure and defeat gnome-orc antagonist, Gnasty Gnorc.

Since the original, countless sequels and spin-offs have been released. But for all intents and purposes, the first one remains the definitive Spyro title.

According to the creators of the game, Toys For Bob, Spyro is coming back in 2027 in the form of Spyro: A Realm Beyond, nearly 30 years after the original game’s 1998 debut.

You can finally fly for real

New for Spyro: A Realm Beyond is the ability to actually fly, not just slowly glide (a point of frustration this writer felt back in the day). According to Toys For Bob, it’s “true dragon flight,” which you can activate with the press of a button.

There won’t be any restrictions when flying. You can do it literally anywhere and any time in the game. But of course, you’ll be forced to think carefully about when to use this ability.

Aside from being able to fly, you might also notice a little change in Spyro’s appearance, with a slightly bigger wingspan than before. It’s not such an important change, but it’s a nice touch considering the new flight mechanics.

And if it matters to you at all, Spyro will also be voiced by Tom Kenny, who’s voiced the main character since 1999’s Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage.

It’s a good mix of fan service for people who enjoyed the original games, but it also acts as a great introduction to a new generation of gamers who want a little more whimsy and adventure in their titles.

Spyro: A Realm Beyond is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2027.
