Nobody really asked for an adult animated comedy revolving around cats doing… cat things. But British comedian Ricky Gervais thinks we need one anyway, and it’s called Alley Cats, premiering on 7 August 2026.
While you might have your own criticisms of Gervais’ work, there might be good reason to be excited for the upcoming series.
It’s a cat’s world and we’re all living in it

Starring an ensemble cast with the likes of Ricky Gervais, Tom Basden, Andrew Brooke, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Jo Hartley, Diane Morgan, Natalie Cassidy, and Tony Way, Alley Cats follows a gang of stray cats who go about their days doing regular feline things while pondering the meaning of life.
Since they’re stray cats, they also have to survive in a world that doesn’t necessarily care about them. From the trailer alone, we can see a sliver of the tender moments you can expect from the series. But at first glance, it’s a series about Ricky Gervais himself, if he was a feral cat.

Or if you grew up with Garfield, it looks like an alternate timeline in which the lazy cat is British and was never adopted by Jon. Kind of sad, but also a really hilarious idea to explore. Where it differs the most, as far as this theory is concerned, is that Garfield hates Mondays, while Gus hates every day.

Whether that’s something that sounds entertaining to you solely depends on whether you like Gervais or not. If you do, it’s definitely something to look forward to this year, especially if you appreciate his incredibly dry humour.
Alley Cats premieres on Netflix as a six-parter on 7 August 2026. Watch the trailer below:
