Molek FMMalaysia Upgrades Its 999 Hotline: What You Need to Know About the New NG MERS System

Malaysia has officially rolled out its brand-new NG MERS 999 (Next Generation Malaysian Emergency Response Services 999) call system, an upgraded way to call for emergency services in situations where literally speaking on the phone just isn’t an option.
It replaces the MERS 999 infrastructure, which has historically been slow or inconsistent when responding to emergencies. But calls with the next generation system will now be faster and smarter, something that’s definitely needed as more and more people are connected.
How does it work?
Ahead of the rollout, Malaysians received text messages prompting them to download the SaveME 999 app, which you’ll need in order to use NG MERS 999. Though we do have to note that not everyone has received the text message, including this writer. That’s already one area of improvement to focus on.
The backbone of the system connects emergency call centres and government agencies, letting them share data in real-time instead of having to rely on outdated handover methods, which aren’t always consistent in the first place. This also means response time, if everything’s executed properly, is much quicker.
Coverage has also been doubled to more than 800 locations nationwide, meaning that more Malaysians (whether they’re in a kampung or city centre) are now plugged into an emergency response system that’s benchmarked against Europe’s NG112 and North America’s NG911.
The biggest leap comes from the SaveME 999 app, which lets users send text, photos, and videos so that operators know exactly how to respond.
These features are literal life savers in situations where speaking isn’t possible, like domestic violence incidents, medical emergencies where the caller can’t talk, or crimes in progress. The system also uses Advanced Mobile Location (AML), which pinpoints a caller’s precise location with far greater accuracy.
According to Telekom Malaysia, the upgrade is one of the most advanced emergency response systems in the world. But only time and real-world emergency use will tell.
For now, there’s still room for improvement, as some Malaysians have pointed out on social media. Some have even expressed connectivity concerns, especially in rural areas where reception isn’t always stable or strong.
Aesthetically, the app isn’t pretty. In fact it looks rather drab and a bit outdated, despite being a fresh rollout. But thankfully the two most important features of the app (a direct call to 999 and another option to send text, photos, or videos) are displayed front and centre, as soon as you launch it.
