In Alor Setar, Kedah, a man who threw a kenduri and livestreamed it is now facing jail and a massive RM50,000 fine.

The reason for this hefty charge is not just for his complete disregard of the Movement Control Order (MCO) but also his offensive words towards the actions the government has taken during this time.

He recorded himself during the kenduri and was heard saying “Kuarantin kepala bapak” which basically suggests he saw no importance of the quarantine. To make matters worse, the background of the video was filled with people helping themselves to food. The video was shared multiple times on Whatsapp.

The man, who is a carpenter, pleaded guilty to wrongful use of the internet charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and is now facing the consequences of his actions. According to NST, the man acknowledges his foolishness and regrets his words, for he will be much poorer after he pays the hefty fine in May.

This goes to show that ignorance is not something anyone can afford at this time, be it a carpenter or a world-renowned celebrity. The Coronavirus does not discriminate and we cannot be careless by throwing big gatherings and disregarding the MCO. There are many people risking their lives to ensure our safety and by spewing offensive words pertaining to the quarantine, it is a complete insult to their sacrifice.

Stay at home, folks.
