There are few titles in the anime world as revered as Ghost in the Shell. We’ve seen many iterations of it over the years, but not every reinterpretation hits the mark, unfortunately.

In 2026, we’re getting another revival fittingly titled THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, through the off-beat lens of Science SARU. We can probably expect great results, since they’re the same studio behind the wildly successful DAN DA DAN anime.

A nostalgic ’90s colour palette

Unveiled at AnimeJapan 2026, the first teaser for the upcoming remake offers a brief but striking glimpse at what we can expect.

As opposed to the brooding aesthetic popularised by other iterations like Stand Alone Complex, the new remake features a vivid, almost dream-like palette. It’s a refreshing take that doesn’t sacrifice the series’ cyberpunk edge.

The story follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 as they navigate a hyper-connected world that blurs the line between organic and artificial intelligence.

But Science SARU’s version appears more expressive, and even a little playful. From what we see in the short teaser, Section 9 feels less rigid and (ironically) more human than past iterations.

You might find this tonal shift a bit weird, but it makes sense coming from Science SARU. After all, they also produced DAN DA DAN, which you might know to be pretty experimental in terms of its animation style and willingness to push boundaries.

Science SARU’s THE GHOST IN THE SHELL is slated for a July 2026 premiere.
