The official trailer for Obsession is out, and if it’s anything to go by, this supernatural horror might make you second-guess any wild fantasies you may have about “wishing” your crush would love you.

A new entry backed by Blumhouse, the film is intentionally unsettling and leans into the uncomfortable truth that love, when forced, can quickly morph into something frightening.

Be careful what you wish for

The film centres around Bear (Michael Johnston), a hopeless romantic who’s infatuated by his childhood friend, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). She sadly doesn’t share the same feelings for him, but then Bear comes across a mysterious toy called a “One Wish Willow”, which grants him just one wish.

In a moment of desperation, he wishes that Nikki would fall in love with him. Miraculously, the wish is actually granted and it seems like everything is falling into place for Bear. But he’ll soon come to regret it.

Nikki’s affection quickly morphs from doting (and slightly clingy) girlfriend to something much more relentless and suffocating. It’s as if she needs Bear like a human needs oxygen.

At this point it’s pretty clear that the premise of the film taps into the “be careful what you wish for” trope, but twists it into a truly disturbing exploration of consent, control, and of course, obsession.

Written and directed by Curry Barker (who you might know from Milk & Serial), Obsession is his first major studio feature. You might also know him and Obsession co-star Cooper Tomlinson as the guys behind ‘that’s a bad idea‘, finding viral fame for their short, comedic skits.

Judging by early screenings, Obsession is definitely not one to miss if you love unsettling horror. The film already has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (albeit with just 35 critic reviews).

Set to premiere in theatres on 15 May 2026, it’s unclear at this point whether Malaysian cinemas will also be screening the film. But this writer’s guess puts it at a delayed premiere on Netflix or another streaming platform. Only time will tell!
