Have Books That You Won’t Read? Donate Them To M’sian Prisoners By Dropping Them At Bukit Gasing
Last year, Malaysia was ranked 6th in the world for buying books and it’s evident in the way our community floods Big Bad Wolf sales every year.
While getting hot deals on books is extremely fun, sometimes we tend to go overboard with our purchasing habits. As an avid reader myself, I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve purchased books that I’ve realised aren’t really my preferred genre. With that, there tends to be a pile just sitting idly on my shelf, collecting dust.
Instead of using these books for decoration, why not donate them to people who will actually read and appreciate them?
Bukit Gasing state assemblyman, Rajiv Rishyakaran, initiated a book donation drive for prisoners in Malaysia starting from today until January 8.
In a Facebook post, Rajiv highlighted how prisoners are usually overlooked which does not help their rehabilitation and re-entry into society. As a way to fix this issue, NGO Pertubuhan Kebajikan Sosial Sivasakthi suggested the book donation initiative that will serve to be educational, motivational, inspirational and even humorous for inmates.
Prisoners are often overlooked by the community. The idea of imprisonment is rehabilitate and help them start a new life…

The books will be sent to Tapah Prison, Taiping Prison, Kamunting Prison, Batu Gajah Prison, Kajang Prison, Melaka Prison and Sungai Buloh Prison.
While Rajiv is very happy to be kickstarting this effort alongside supporting an NGO he believes in, he is wary about the outcome. He stated, “Even if we get 10,000 books, it won’t be enough because one prison alone has a few thousand inmates and we have about seven prisons as our beneficiaries.”
In that case, it seems like we all have to do our part and contribute to this great initiative. So, if you have any books to donate, feel free to do so.
The books can be of any genre and language and you can drop them off at the office from 10am to 5pm.
You can also just drive by and drop them off at Pejabat ADUN Bukit Gasing, 7A Jalan 52/8, PJ New Town, 46200 Petaling Jaya without stepping in.
All you have to do is give them a heads-up at the number 03-7954 7490.
