Your E-Scooter & E-Bike Will Be Banned On Public Roads And You’ll Need To Get A Licence To Ride Them

Instead of driving around in cars, some Malaysians opt to travel by E-scooter or E-bike due to its convenience, low cost and low maintenance.

However, a new bill has been proposed to ban these mobile modes of transportation because, while it’s fun to zip here and there on your E-scooter or E-bike, it’s actually dangerous for both you and other drivers on the road.

Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, said the ministry will soon regulate the use of these vehicles through the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2020.

The main reason as to why this bill is being pushed and is currently awaiting approval is because insurance does not cover any damages should you be involved in an accident. Not only that, your injuries will not be compensated either which means you’ll have to fork out a tonne of cash and in this economy… that’s just not rational…

The ministry is currently imposing a ban on these types of vehicles on public roads. In addition, all riders must apply for licence before using them.

Malaysia is not the only country facing this regulation. Singapore has already passed this law and if riders of E-scooters fail to adhere to it, they will be fined S$2,000 or jail for up to 3 months.
