Malaysians definitely love infusing elements of horror into comedy, and if you grew up here, you’ve probably been terrorised for a joke at least once by a family member or even classmate.

I personally remember my older sister telling me that if I opened my eyes after 10 pm, then ghosts would think I was their “friend” and come “take me away” just to get me to fall asleep on time.

Now, in the modern era of social media and TikTok trends, people have found fun in scaring their kids or younger siblings with an audio featuring the menacing, off-putting laugh of the Kuntilanak.

The trend basically entails placing the clueless victim in front of the camera as the video starts recording and left alone in the room with the door shut while the disturbing audio plays, distressing the child as they try and fail to escape.

While it is understood that the act is meant as a harmless joke, some netizens have noted that the experience may prove to be traumatic for the youngsters, essentially making it a form of abuse.

Many questioned how those who participated in the trend could even stomach the sight of the kids struggling and crying in sheer shock and fear. There was also the issue of trust, as many TikTokers had lied about the context of the video prior to shooting.

In 2017, American YouTuber DaddyOFive lost custody of two of his five kids who were regularly seen as in his popular prank videos. The biological mother, Rose Hall, had filed for emergency custody out of concern since the videos depicted how their kids were left frantic after falling victim to his pranks.

YouTube later removed and flagged some of the channel’s videos due to bullying, and going against its harassment policies.

Well, if you were thinking of ways to bond with your kids or younger siblings this weekend, maybe opt for a movie night or an ice cream date instead?
