We’re all bound to experience a failed romance at one point or another. It’s part and parcel of life, and it teaches us things about ourselves that we otherwise wouldn’t have learned in other circumstances.
It’s that kind of build up to love and eventual heartbreak that takes centrestage in The Failed Romances, a hybrid cabaret production that explores one of life’s most universal experiences through a Tamil lens.
Turning the grand romantic myths of Tamil cinema inside out

Presented by the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) and created by TerryandTheCuz with Australian theatre-maker Adriano Cortese, The Failed Romances tells the story of the heart.
Led by Govin Ruben (also the founder of TerryandTheCuz) and Singaporean television actress and presenter Udaya Soundari, audiences are taken on a messy journey through inherited myths about masculinity, femininity, attraction, and belonging.
Essentially, the production tears apart any preconceived notions of love and heartbreak that we may have learned from generations of Tamil cinema, and redefines them in a way that’s reflective of the lived experiences of the South Asian diaspora.

Accompanying the two performers is a live six-piece band performing iconic and reimagined Tamil songs.
You can catch The Failed Romances at The Studio, JCPAC from 12 to 15 November 2026 ahead of performances in Singapore and New York’s Lincoln Center in January 2027. The latter is a historic first, being the first Malaysian production to debut on that stage.
