Before house music became a global phenomenon, there was Lil Louis.
The Chicago-born DJ, producer and songwriter is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of house music, with a career that began remarkably early. In 1974, a 12-year-old Louis was asked to take over the decks at a party organised by his mother after the scheduled DJ fell ill. The crowd’s reaction sparked a career that would eventually help shape an entire genre.
By his teens, Louis was already running clubs and pushing the boundaries of DJing. In the mid-’70s, he pioneered the use of edits as a DJ tool, while his 1977 party is credited in his biography as the world’s first Rave.
Then came ‘French Kiss’.
Released in 1989, the track became one of house music’s defining records, turning its hypnotic groove and famously dramatic tempo changes into a worldwide dancefloor phenomenon. It remains the record most closely associated with Lil Louis, but his influence stretches far beyond one track.
His catalogue also includes ‘I Called U’, ‘Club Lonely’ and ‘Saved My Life’, while his production and songwriting credits include names such as Jay-Z, Lil’ Kim, Babyface, and Me’Shell Ndegeocello.
And now, more than five decades after that first DJ gig, Lil Louis is finally coming to Kuala Lumpur for his first-ever show in the city this Wednesday, 7 October, at YKŌ.

For anyone who cares about the roots of house music, this is more than another name on a Wednesday night lineup. It’s a chance to see one of the people who helped write the blueprint, in the flesh.
