Thailand is racing to protect its global image after a recent spate of public sex incidents have forced authorities to crack down on tourists behaving indecently in the country.

“Inappropriate behaviour contradicts the beautiful culture of Thailand.”

The new initiative by local authorities comes after a couple in Phuket was caught performing a sexual act in a tuk-tuk in the middle of a popular tourist spot. Why they did it in a crowded area defies all logic and meaning, really. Or perhaps, they just didn’t care.

Thailand says the visas of a 41-year-old Spanish man and a 43-year-old Peruvian woman would be revoked before deporting and blacklisting them.

Although Thailand has an infamous reputation as a sex tourism destination, the Land of Smiles is actually quite socially conservative, with public nudity and sexual acts punishable by a fine of up to ฿5,000 (RM605). Whether these fines are enough of a deterrent, especially for foreign tourists, is another matter altogether.

Still, the country also decriminalised cannabis back in 2022, making it a popular stop for backpackers and younger tourists looking to have a little bit of fun away from home.

The recent case involving the Spanish-Peruvian duo is only the latest public sex incident. In April, a French couple were deported after footage of them having sex on a beach in Phuket sparked online rage among Thai netizens.

And much like the latest incident, a French couple were deported and blacklisted after an online video showed them having sex in a tuk-tuk in Phuket.

If you notice the pattern, most of these tourists come from Europe. They can definitely afford a hotel room, at the very least.
