A disturbing incident from Odisha, India, has sparked widespread criticism after a man was seen carrying his sister’s skeletal remains to a bank in an attempt to prove her death and access her account.

The man, identified as 52-year-old Jitu Munda, reportedly exhumed his sister’s skeleton after facing repeated difficulties withdrawing 19,300 rupees from her bank account. According to reports, bank officials refused his request unless he could provide either the account holder in person or proper legal documentation.

Munda, who claimed he had no official papers to support his case, allegedly carried his sister’s remains approximately three kilometres to the bank in an effort to verify her death.

The incident was captured on video and quickly circulated online, prompting public outrage and questions about the bank’s handling of the situation.

Many locals have criticised the institution for its rigid requirements and lack of sensitivity.

Authorities have since become involved, stating that the matter will be investigated and handled on humanitarian grounds. Police officials have also confirmed that further inquiry is underway into both the circumstances surrounding the exhumation and the bank’s response.

The case has reignited debate in India over bureaucratic barriers faced by rural and low-income families, particularly when dealing with documentation-heavy financial systems in urgent personal situations.
