As children start returning to school, kickstarting the new normal, this primary school in Tasik Gelugor, Penang, is putting in extra effort into welcoming their students back onto school grounds.
While most children who return are apprehensive because they haven’t finished all the homework given to them via online learning, these children at SK Pengkalan Jaya seem to be at ease when they were met with their favourite superhero and cartoon character, Spiderman and Minnie Mouse, at the gate.
Watch the clip below:
All 300 students were greeted and given face masks by the mascots as part of the school’s initiative to protect them from contracting the Covid-19 virus. This of course is one of the SOPs that schools must adhere to in order to reopen. The mascots even joined them in class and sat by empty desks.
This idea was brought upon by Pejabat Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Permatang Berangan and the school’s Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru (PIBG) board. They suggested hiring mascots because they know it will motivate the children as well as brighten up their day.
Nor Hafizah Othman, the ADUN of Permatang Berangan, said,
“Clearly our efforts were not in vain, for the children looked so happy to see the surprise. They looked excited to start the new school session that has been postponed for so long due to Covid-19.”
The principal of the school thanked everyone who contributed into making the children’s first day a special and memorable one. He added,
“We hope that this encouragement will give strength to our students in order to adapt to the new learning environment.”
