M’sian Artist Paints Old Sneakers with Roti Gardenia Design
Remember when Malaysians believed armageddon was upon us and we quickly began hoarding items at the supermarket? Well, amongst the items with the highest demand is our beloved roti gardenia.
Since the MCO has been ongoing for months now, and probably due to people realising that food supplies have been and will be going strong, the panic has subsided. However, despite the government reassuring us not to worry and not to panic buy, Malaysians are still hoarding bread, especially Gardenia.
I mean, who wouldn’t want to hoard that since it’s sungguh enak dimakan begitu sahaja?
Malaysia’s obsession with the sliced bread brand is so strong that a street wear shop in Johor by the name of Uglykim Shop has creatively translated our love into some dope sneakers!

Not only are we in MCO but Muslims are fasting too… The hunger and the boredom was just too much to bear, so why not use that spare time to transform a pair of dirty old kicks into fresh bread (the expiry date tag says 16 May 2020). Despite the bread being RM2.50, I highly doubt these shoes will go for the same price. Watch the intricate process below.
Other than this local favourite, the art studio also features other creative hand-painted designs, all surrounding Malaysian pop culture references. Check out this sick Too Phat sneaker!

Based in Johor, the shop is riddled with graffiti since the owner himself, @akeemxx is a known graffiti artist. Not only does he paint shoes and jackets, but he does murals within his neighbourhood as well.

The shop is currently closed due to Covid-19 but their Instagram @uglykimshop is alive and well.
