M’sian Animated Horror-Comedy Series About SEA Folklore Set To Premiere in 2025
Malaysian coming-of-age horror-comedy series, Kisah Bawah Tanah, is now slated for a 2025 premiere, according to Animasia Studio.
This comes fresh off the heels of a new collaborative partnership between Animasia Studio and Komet Productions, with the latter being led by renowned Southeast Asian content and media professional Ahmad Izham Omar.
A new era of diverse storytelling from Southeast Asia
Kisah Bawah Tanah follows two skeletal zombie best friends, Sam and Zack, as they make their way through a world filled with hilarious re-imaginations of creatures from Southeast Asian folklore.
Comic relief aside, the series also captures the exhilarating journey of growing up, celebrating the unbreakable bonds of friendship, and the awkward (yet, relatable) experiences of navigating life’s uncertainties. Designed to resonate with a diverse and global audience, the series offers a fresh perspective on both familiar myths and more obscure folklore.

Through the new partnership, Komet Productions will play a key role in expanding the Kisah Bawah Tanah intellectual property’s (IP) potential. This involves devising strategies for licensing, promotions, distribution, and merchandising.
“We view Kisah Bawah Tanah as a pivotal step in maturing Malaysian animation beyond the children’s market. We’re blending horror, comedy, and our rich local folklore to create animation that entertains and resonates with audiences worldwide,” said Izham.
According to Kisah Bawah Tanah co-creator, Hendra Wardi, the new partnership perfectly fuses Komet Productions’ new blend of creative energy and the series’ madcap humour.
“With their support, our ambitions have grown, and we’re confident that this collaboration will propel the series and brand to new heights. Everyone has stories that spooked them as kids, and now it’s time to share the ones that have resonated through generations here in Southeast Asia,” Hendra said.
Currently in production, the first season of Kisah Bawah Tanah will consist of 26 11-minute episodes. To keep up to date with the series’ production, head to the official Kisah Bawah Tanah website.
