Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has confirmed that one of seven Malaysian-owned commercial ships previously stranded in the Strait of Hormuz has safely passed through.
According to an MFA statement, the ship was able to pass through the strait thanks to high level diplomatic talks over the phone between Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, along with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Mohamad Hasan, and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

In a post on X, the Iranian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur confirmed the safe passage of the Malaysian ship, reiterating the close ties that Iran and Malaysia hold together.
“We had said that the Islamic Republic of Iran does not forget his friends,” the post reads. “The first Malaysian ship passed through the Strait of Hormuz.”
As previously reported, Malaysian ships have been given approval to pass through the strait toll-free, saving around RM8 million (US$2 million) per ship. While the first ship makes its way to its final destination, all we can do now is wait for the remaining six to pass.
“Malaysia remains firmly committed to the principle of freedom of navigation, safety, and security of maritime passage, in accordance with international law,” reads the MFA statement.
“Malaysia also reiterates the importance of continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement in addressing regional challenges and maintaining peace and stability.”
