While Malaysians don’t always see eye-to-eye on many subjects such as political beliefs or football teams (with the exception of our national team whom even immigrants love), I think we can all agree that when it comes to food, we’re our biggest supporters.

For decades, Malaysian food has been praised by people from all over the globe, with some even attempting to recreate their own variations of our national dishes (remember “crispy rendang“? lmfao).

On that note, it’s no surprise that 4 restaurants in KL and Penang were awarded with Michelin Stars during the Michelin Star Revelation 2023 held at Berjaya Times Square KL yesterday (Dec 13).

The two restaurants in KL awarded with one Michelin Star for their excellent cuisine were DC by Darren Chin which specialises in French fare and Dewakan, a restaurant serving Malaysian food albeit with a modern twist.

Aside from the obvious fact that they consistently prepare mouth-watering dishes, both the aforementioned restaurants pride themselves on using locally-sourced produce.

As for Penang, the two restaurants that received the prestigious award were Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery that serves delectable Peranakan cuisine birthed from the secret recipes of head chef Auntie Gaik, alongside Au Jardin which focuses on European cuisine with a slight Malaysian twist.

Despite only 4 restaurants being awarded Michelin stars, 32 other local restaurants received a Bib Gourmand which is an award that acknowledges “friendly establishments serving good food at moderate prices”.

Additionally, Lim Yan You from Au Jardin won a Service Award while Leanne Lim of Dewakan managed to snag the Michelin Young Chef award.

Commenting on his team’s success, Darren Chin said “It is a real milestone for gastronomy in Malaysia to have the Michelin Guide, and special thanks must go to my team and beautiful wife Nana.”

Head Chef Kim Hock Su of Au Jardin also shared some words regarding his restaurant’s accolades saying, “We are blown away. We did not expect two awards tonight. All the awards goes to my team, who are the ones that make it happen.”

Shoutouts to all the hard-working chefs and restaurants involved in the Michelin Awards for their efforts in showing the world that Malaysia is home to some of the greatest cooks!
