From M’sia to Memphis: Azmyl Yunor’s Music Journey Comes Full Circle With US Performance This May
Ladies and gentlemen, music lovers – and really anyone who believes that music possesses the capacity to unite us all – prepare yourselves to witness history being made.
Renowned Malaysian singer-songwriter Azmyl Yunor and his band Azmyl & the Truly Asia are scheduled to make their an appearance at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee this May – marking the band’s first overseas performance.
The band will open the festival on May 5 with a lengthy 65-minute concert, and on May 6 they will perform once more at the storied Blues Tent in Handy Park, within the boundaries of the Beale Street Historic District. Azmyl & the Truly Asia are prepared to shake the stage with their soul-stirring music at the Memphis Tourism “Blues Stage on Beale,” where they are on the same bill as headliners like Los Lobos, Robert Plant, and Earth, Wind, and Fire.
The band also has plans to visit other nearby cities while touring the United States, and we’re eagerly waiting for them to reveal their tour schedule in the near future!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Azmyl’s music, his most recent album John Bangi Blues was recorded in a live studio session with the help of his power trio, the Truly Asia including drummer Ammar Khairi and bassist Kristopher Chong. N.R. Lohan from Cats in Love also joined them in 2021 as a special guest guitarist for their live performances and tours.
Azmyl is well-known in Malaysia for his frank criticism of significant civil and humanitarian rights problems in his music videos. His latest song, ‘Skodeng Blues,’ was composed jointly with LGBT artist Shika and is essentially a piece of critique towards Malaysia’s moral police. Azmyl has emerged as a rebellious voice against stereotypes of what it means to be a musician in Malaysia through his music.
From fighting for important social causes in Malaysia to taking the stage at the iconic Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Azmyl Yunor and his band Azmyl & the Truly Asia are true champions of artistic expression and fearless individuality.
And that, my friends, is how you weave music into magic.
The event is a component of the larger Memphis in May International Festival, which will feature programmes paying tribute to Malaysia in 2023. You may find more details here.
