Model for Childish Gambino’s ‘Awaken, My Love!’ Album Cover Unpaid
Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, has become world-renowned for both his musical prowess as well as acting chops in shows like Community and Atlanta.
As a musical artist, Childish Gambino’s ‘Awaken, My Love!’ is what brought him to mass appeal, with the song ‘Redbone’ in particular being a major highlight.
One of the most striking things about the 2016 album is its cover, featuring a euphoric face with white pupils and a beaded headdress.
Turns out, Childish Gambino has not been fairly compensating the artists who created this iconic album cover, as recently revealed through a now-deleted Instagram post.
Model Giannina Oteto has accused Childish Gambino and his team of not paying residuals and any sort of payment to Oteto, the makeup artist, and stylist.
Oteto states that this was all part of the contract signed by all parties involved, with the model also having her lawyer contact Gambino’s team to no avail.
With the statute of limitation lifted, Oteto was bittersweet in her 25 December Instagram post explaining the situation.
This is not the first time in music history that the subjects of album covers were not fairly compensated for their work, as was the case with artists like Vampire Weekend and Dido.
