10 Lovey-Dovey Films To Binge With Your Better Half On Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day slowly approaching, you might be wondering what to do with your boo on this special day. While some of us love going out on big adventures, others prefer to keep it chill and spend the day at home with our favourite person. If the latter is you, we’ve got a selection of films we think you’ll love.

1. Istanbul Aku Datang! (2012)

Starting off with something a little more local, we have Istanbul Aku Datang!

Dian (Lisa Surihani) flies to Istanbul to be with her boyfriend, Azad (Tomok). She initially thinks she has a place to stay (in the form of her boyfriend’s apartment). But since they’re not married yet, she has to keep things halal by finding her own place.

However, things take an unexpected and complicated turn when she finds out that she’s not living in her new apartment rental alone – there’s Harris (Beto Kusyairy) too.

2. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

Stranger Than Fiction follows the life of lonely IRS agent Harold Crick (Will Ferrell). He starts hearing a live narration of his life in his head, and does everything he can to prevent negative outcomes.

But when he realises there isn’t much he can do to defy the supposed flow of his “story”, he tries to find the author (Emma Thompson) who’s narrating his life in a bid to prevent her from killing him off. While the romance in this film is more of a side plot, it’s still worth a mention on this list thanks to its enemies-to-lovers arc.

3. I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)

Steven Russel (Jim Carrey) was a married cop. After getting into an accident, he decides to come out of the closet and move to Florida to live his best life (with bad checks and credit cards included).

When he gets sent to prison, he meets fellow inmate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor), and they fall in love. Morris then inspires him to become the most successful conman ever.

4. Puteri Gunung Ledang (2004)

Puteri Gunung Ledang is a Malaysian epic fantasy film set in the 15th century. It centres around the mythical princess of Mount Ledang (Tiara Jacquelina), who falls in love with a warrior named Hang Tuah (M. Nasir).

The couple is forced to make sacrifices for each other as they both explore the intricacies of their respective cultures.

Unfortunately for the two protagonists, this love is forbidden due to issues of class, religious obligations, and societal expectations.

5. Entergalactic (2022)

Jabari (Kid Cudi) is an ambitious artist who has just moved into his dream apartment in Manhattan.

When he falls for his photographer neighbour, Meadow (Jessica Williams), Jabari has to figure out whether he has enough space for her (and love in general) in his life.

6. Whatcha Wearin’? (2012)

Hyun Seung (Ji Sung) is having a lot of trouble getting over his ex-girlfriend. Yoon Jung (Kim Ah Joong) is desperate to spice up her bland five-year relationship. When the latter decides to have phone sex with her boyfriend, she accidentally calls Hyun Seung, and unknowingly does the deed with him instead.

They eventually develop a casual friendship after this mishap and decide to meet each other in real life. But of course, they soon fall for each other.

7. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

This one probably needs no introduction, but we’ll give it to you anyway.

Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a socially awkward man who plays in local garage band Sex Bob-Omb. Then one day, he chances upon delivery girl Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

In order to win her heart, he’ll have to defeat her seven deadly exes in classic video game style.

8. Our Times (2015)

Our Times follows Lin Truly (Joe Chen), a stressed office worker who reminisces the good old days back as she listens to an old Andy Lau cassette.

We then flash back to high school, where 17-year-old Lin (Vivian Sung) conspires with the school gangster boss, Hsu Tai-Yu (Darren Wang), to break up a couple whom they both have respective crushes on. But along the way, the end up falling for each other.

9. Stardust (2007)

Tristan (Charlie Cox), a young man from the fictional English town of Wall, enters the magical kingdom of Stormhold to collect a fallen star. He plans to give this to his beloved Victoria in return for her hand in marriage.

He soon realises, however, that the star is actually a woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). But Tristan isn’t the only one looking for her. Witches, as well as the Princes of Stormhold want to keep her for themselves.

10. A Tourist’s Guide to Love (2023)

After going through an unexpected breakup, travel industry executive Amanda Riley (Rachael Leigh Cook) goes to Vietnam to secretly study the country’s tourism sector, acting as a casual tourist. There, she meets local tour guide Sinh (Scott Ly). He shows her the beauty of Vietnam, while the two slowly develop an affinity for each other.

While this movie is about a white person who goes to Asia (we’ve seen this trope too many times), A Tourist’s Guide to Love strays from the usual by actually showcasing an authentic Vietnam with two loveable characters.
