I am beginning to run out of ways to start an article on the struggles we all have had to face during this period of limbo where we’re just sitting at home, curbing the virus.

Malaysians have truly had to face it all. From watching our children scratch their heads as they try to understand a complex school syllabus through a screen to spiralling endlessly as we attempt to fight intrusive thoughts that encroach our mind at times of loneliness, our struggles are nuanced and personal yet we all have a deep sense of understanding and empathy towards each other.

While social distancing, face masks, obligatory temperature checks and sanitization have kept us from contracting the virus, it is our solidarity and our will to soldier on despite the many setbacks that have kept Malaysia strong during this pandemic.

With the constant upsurge in the amount of cases, one might feel more inclined to throw in the towel and just engulf themselves in the feeling of dejection, which is totally understandable. That is why mental health hotlines have been ringing non-stop in light of this upsetting news.

However, it’s important we weigh in the negatives but focus more on the positives so as to not feel as if our routine of curbing the virus is fruitless. In times when we feel we are not doing enough, maybe we can look outward to see where else we can inject our effort, time, energy and money into.
