Malaysia’s Independence Day is around the corner, and everyone’s favourite fast food chain just announced how we can get free burgers.

The historic day in our country usually ushers in a plethora of Jalur Gemilang (Malaysia’s national flag) sightings beforehand, as well as promotions from shops and eateries. Joining in on this year’s celebrations is McDonald’s who are giving out 60,000 free McChicken burgers on 31st August 2021.

To claim a free burger, individuals will have to wave the Malaysia flag and chant Merdeka three times from their cars while at the pick-up station – much like how our first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman did for seven times on 31st August 1957 to proclaim our country’s independence.

McDonald’s free McChicken burgers will be up for grabs at 202 nationwide drive-through outlets in Malaysia. It’ll be on a first-come-first-serve basis for the first 300 cars to pull up at each location.

The deal is part of McDonald’s Drive-Thru Carnival for the month of August 2021. For the upcoming Merdeka celebrations from 27th till 31st August, they’ll have several “Week 4” drive-through promotions, including free burgers via the Merdeka Chant promotion.

Another deal Malaysians can look forward to is the Merdeka Car Plate promotion.

The promotion will also include McDonald’s giving out 20,000 gift cards during the four days leading up to Merdeka Day, beginning from tomorrow, 27th August. How it works is that they’ll announce two numbers on their official social media pages for individuals to match up their car license plates with and claim the gift card.

However, this promotion is also limited to the first 100 customers dropping by each drive-through location per day. As it’s part of the Merdeka celebrations, those wanting to claim this freebie are required to shout “Merdeka!” thrice too.

As Covid-19 is still a cause of concern in the country while we’re celebrating Merdeka, remember to wear a face mask while dropping by the nearest McDonald’s drive-through location before you showcase your patriotism for the love of burgers!
