Disney Pixar’s upcoming animated film, Raya and the Last Dragon has dropped a new trailer that shows and tells us more about the magical fantasy land Kumandra, which is inspired by various Southeast Asian cultures.

The trailer opens up with Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) trying to comfort a secretly-kickass crying baby and quickly turns into a cool chase sequence. Oh, there are ninja cats too.

Watch the trailer below:

Raya then recruits several more to help in her quest to find the last dragon (Awkwafina) that is supposed to be the key in stopping the monstrous and terrorising Druun from destroying the world.

As always with Disney, the film looks beautiful with a palette of colourful characters, costumes and environments. There are also glimpses of possible epic fight scenes that could showcase several SEA martial art styles.

Disney has come a long way from having token People of Colour characters in their films. Excellent films like Moana, Coco and the recent Soul (please watch it!) have proved that you can tell relatable stories even with different faces on screen.

Directed by Carlos López Estrada and Don Hall, it stars Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Benedict Wong, Daniel Dae Kim and Sandra Oh. Fun fact, the film is written by Qui Nguyen and Malaysian Adele Lim, who co-wrote Crazy Rich Asians’ screen-adaptation!

Raya and the Last Dragon comes out on 5 March 2021 on Disney+. Let’s hope the streaming service will be available here soon.
