The Last of Us Season 2 is just around the corner, set to premiere on 14 April 2025.

The recently released trailer reveals there’s a lot to unpack. Let’s just say it gives us a much closer glimpse into the next chapter of Joel and Ellie’s journey.

Peace is just another fleeting moment

Picking up five years after the harrowing events of Season 1, Joel and Ellie have settled into a semblance of normalcy in Jackson, Wyoming. The trailer showcases this thriving community, complete with bustling streets and familiar faces, including Tommy and Maria.

But if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll know that peace is often fleeting in this world.

Ellie, now in her late teens, has matured into a formidable survivor. The trailer hints at her deepening bond with Dina (Isabela Merced), capturing moments that mirror iconic scenes from the game, such as their intimate dance. There’s absolutely no doubt in the world that this relationship will become a focal point of the series.

Of course, good times never last. The introduction of Abby becomes a pivotal moment for the story, with her presence signalling intense confrontations down the line. It’s especially concerning, considering her complex involvement with Joel’s past actions.

The world outside Jackson remains just as messed up as it was before. But the trailer also unveils the looming threats of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), a militant faction led by Isaac, portrayed by Jeffrey Wright. Their clashes with the Seraphites, a religious cult, introduce new layers of danger and moral ambiguity.

If the trailer is anything to go by, we can assume the series remains visually impressive. It perfectly juxtaposes the serenity of Jackson with the haunting desolation of the outside world, teeming with infected and human adversaries alike.

Season 1 set a really high bar, but we think the introduction of new characters and factions in Season 2 will tastefully expand the narrative, pitting our protagonists against deeper challenges that they’ll need to overcome.

Malaysian viewers can watch The Last of Us Season 2 on 14 April, when it premieres on Max.
