There’s something undeniably special about a watch that fits the wrist just right, complementing the old-school vibe it exudes.
If you’re a fan of vintage watches or just appreciate timeless design in a sea of overbuilt giants, the new 36mm SPB521, SPB523, and SPB524—part of Seiko’s Presage Classic Series—might tickle your fancy.
For a bit of context, Presage isn’t exactly a newcomer to the scene. It’s been part of Seiko’s DNA since the ’60s. Back then, it was a Japan-only collection—a well-kept secret among those in the know. But in 2016, Seiko decided to share the Presage lineup with the rest of the world.
Since then, the line has become the home for Seiko’s classically styled, mechanical-only pieces—sort of the fancy cousin to the rugged, adventure-ready Prospex lineup.
Modern components with a timeless, vintage aesthetic

With these new watches being dubbed the ‘Edo Silk’ models, Seiko’s doubling down on a vibe that feels refreshingly old-school. At 36mm across, these watches are compact, but don’t be fooled into thinking they’re just for smaller wrists or a “ladies’ size.” Consider them unisex.
In fact, this writer thinks there’s a certain confidence in wearing something this well-proportioned. The kind of confidence that says you don’t need your watch to shout—it whispers, and people still listen.
Design-wise, they stay true to what Presage is all about: Clean, elegant lines with just enough detail to keep things interesting. The cases are smoothly polished with subtle facets, conical crowns, and a slightly thick profile at 12.5mm—a bit chunky for a time-only watch, but it’s still pretty acceptable.

Plus, Seiko has never shied away from a bit of wrist presence anyway, and here it adds to the charm.
But the dials are where the real magic happens. Inspired by traditional Japanese silk and coloured with tones from the Edo period, each one brings something a little different to the table.
You’ve got the SPB521 in a pale Aijiro blue that’s as calming as a quiet morning; the SPB523 in a warm gradient Fushi-iro brown that somehow feels both modern and nostalgic (this one’s my pick); and the SPB524 in a clean Shiro-iro white, wrapped in gold PVD for a bit of quiet luxury.

And since these are time-only watches, you won’t see any date window—just polished alpha hands, baton markers, and a beautiful fabric-like texture that catches the light just right.
The transparent caseback showcases Seiko’s in-house calibre 6R51. If we’re being really honest, it looks quite plain. But it does give you a solid three-day power reserve, 100 metres of water resistance, and the kind of reliability the brand’s known for. It gets the job done.

The bracelet deserves a shout too. It’s a seven-row stainless steel piece with short, rounded links that look very flexible, comfortable, and not overly flashy.
The gold PVD model comes with a matching bracelet, of course, and they all feature a slick concealed clasp with push-button release. It’s a thoughtful design that’ll make this watch a breeze to wear on a daily basis.
A subtle nod to personal, more considered design

These new additions to the Classic Series don’t scream for attention—they just look like they belong. Not oversized billboards, but subtle companions that age with you.
You might be concerned about their small size, but if you look back at watches pre-2000s, it was the norm for men’s watches to be around the 34-36mm size. Let’s stop with all this absurd toxic masculinity and embrace the vintage aesthetic the way it should be.
If you’ve been on the hunt for something classic, wearable, and a little different from what everyone else has strapped to their wrist, these new Presage ‘Edo Silk pieces are definitely worth a serious look. You can check them out at a Seiko Boutique or authorised dealer near you.
