The world of dinosaur media has lost an icon today in the passing of Sam Neill, beloved the world over for his starring role in the famed Jurassic Park franchise.
The actor passed suddenly on 13 July 2026 in Sydney, Australia, as announced by his loved ones on social media.
An icon who inspired a love of dinosaurs for an entire generation of adults and children

Neill, a New Zealander, had undergone treatment for lymphoma, but shared that he was cancer-free earlier this year.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau (Māori for “family”) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday, 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” reads a statement posted on Neill’s official Instagram account.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.”
Neill’s acting career began in the 1970s, primarily in New Zealand-based productions. His big Hollywood break arrived in his casting as Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, which became a monumental success at the box office back in 1993.

The film was based on a science fiction novel of the same name, penned by Michael Crichton.
Following the success of the first film, Neill went on to reprise his role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World: Dominion (2022). But most references to the Kiwi actor almost always point to his first appearance as Alan Grant, and it’s no surprise why.
The film helped inspire a curious fascination with dinosaurs amongst an entire generation of children and adults who had never seen these prehistoric creatures realistically (for the time) depicted on the silver screen.
His role as Alan Grant, an intelligent, child-loathing paleontologist, was a refreshing take on a leading man in an action/sci-fi film.

The world may have lost a legend, but his legacy is forever. Rest in peace, Sam Neill.
