Roti Canai Dethrones Nasi Lemak as The No.1 MCO Food

Roti canai has always been our go-to meal for breakfast, especially when it’s served straight from your neighbourhood Mamak’s pans. Despite the MCO still being in full force, nothing can stop our love for the Indian-influenced flatbread.

According to The Star, roti canai is now the “new king” of Malaysian delights, dethroning the all-time favourite nasi lemak! It is ranked No. 1 on the GrabFood and FoodPanda list during this MCO period.

The funny thing is- before the first day of the MCO, roti canai was not even ranked on the list.

FoodPanda Malaysia managing director Sayantan Das said roti canai and roti telur are now its main items for breakfast and snacks. Next on the list are nasi goreng kampung, nasi goreng ayam and nasi ayam penyet.

As for our beloved Nasi Lemak, it has dropped to the sixth spot, followed by chicken satay, chicken rice, nasi goreng Pattaya and nasi kukus ayam berempah.

Grab’s list, on the other hand, is seconded by satay, followed by egg tart, roti telur, tau foo fah, and siew pau. Nasi lemak is listed seventh in its top 10 list, followed by nasi impit, telur dadar (omelette) and nasi goreng kampung. Man, listing all this food is making me hungry…

Malaysia Grab country head Sean Goh said, “It’s quite clear that many of us are missing the Mamak and local street food during this stay-at-home period”.

Ugh… who doesn’t?! Especially when you can get a hot, hearty and crispy roti canai while watching bola sepak on the huge flatscreen TV and sipping teh tarik.

What’s not to love about roti canai? We can dip it in spicy sauces and even use it to dubiously transport our daily needs…
