RM5,000 Bounty for Info on Masked Man Who Set Woman on Fire

A 62-year-old woman has been placed in an induced coma after being set ablaze by an unidentified masked man as she was opening a lottery shop in Taman Pusat Kepong on 9 August.

The victim had just unlocked the premises at around 7.30 a.m. when the man approached her, dousing her in petrol before setting her alight with a lighter.

According to nearby CCTV and eyewitness accounts, the man arrived on foot and carried the attack before calmly walking towards the back of the building.

Thankfully, however, workers from a nearby restaurant rushed to the victim and helped put out the fire.

“I am sickened and outraged by the brutal attack at Taman Pusat Kepong yesterday, where a woman was seriously injured after being set on fire,” Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said in a Facebook post.

“Pouring fuel on a woman and setting her on fire is an act of shocking cruelty. The person responsible must be found, arrested and made to face the full force of the law.”

According to Dic Lai, Lim’s personal secretary, the victim’s family is “in the dark” about the possible motivation behind the attack.

For now, investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from around Taman Pusat Kepong to determine the suspect’s movements and possible whereabouts, according to Sentul acting district police chief Superintendent Jasni Zolpa.

“We have collected CCTV footage and are reviewing it. The identity of the suspect and motive for the attack are still subject to further investigation,” he said.

The victim is reportedly in critical but stable condition, with doctors having placed her in an induced coma as they attempt to treat her injuries. Lim has also offered a RM5,000 bounty for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
