So, I’m not a pro photographer or anything—just someone who loves snapping casual shots of my cats, food, random sunsets, and friends when we’re out doing something cool or nothing at all.
I’ve had a few instant cameras over the years (including some classic Polaroids), and they’ve all been fun… Until you waste a shot because the lighting is off or something’s weirdly out of focus.
Film is NOT cheap, and nothing stings more than a wasted shot you thought would be perfect. But that’s why I’m kind of excited about the new Polaroid Flip—slated for a 29 April launch.
Retro looks, modern heart
What makes the Flip cool isn’t just the nostalgic folding design (though yes, it totally channels that old-school Polaroid look and feel in the best way). It’s the smarter tech hiding inside.
In the viewfinder, you’ll see a red LED warning light that tells you when something’s off with your shot before you press the shutter.
Whether something’s overexposed, underexposed, or even slightly out of focus, the Flip calls it out.
For someone like me who just wants a good photo without fiddling with every little setting, it’s kind of a game-changer.
And the flash? According to Polaroid, it’s their most powerful one ever. When unfolded, the flash can light up a subject over 14 feet away.
That said, it’s not overkill. You can still tone the flash down for closer shots, which is great because nobody wants to look like a ghost in a group shot.
One of the more neat tricks up the Flip’s sleeve is its autofocus ability, which uses a sonar sensor (yes, like the bat stuff).
The camera uses four fixed lenses on a rotating wheel (each tuned to a specific distance: 0.65, 0.85, 1.2, and 2.5 metres), and picks the best one automatically based on how far away your subject is.
Making the Flip more convenient for 2025 is its USB-C rechargeable battery that’s also replaceable (thank you Polaroid).
You can also link it up to the Polaroid app via Bluetooth if you want to unlock some fun (but not essential) things like manual exposure control, a self-timer, and even double exposures.
The Polaroid Flip isn’t a pro camera by any stretch of the imagination.
It’s an instant camera for people who just want better, more reliable instant shots without all the guesswork or wasted film.
It’ll retail for US$199 (RM878) but we suggest following Polaroid Malaysia on Instagram to keep up with the local price, which has yet to be announced.
