Phone snubbing—or ‘phubbing’— is a common occurrence at bars and other watering holes across the world. It’s a global phenomenon that takes away the social aspect of drinking with your buddies.

After all, when you’re out socialising, it’s important to be mentally present, though sometimes we can’t control the urge to peek at our notifications. But Heineken has devised a contraption that forces you to put your phone down.

It’s called The Flipper.

Triggered by the start of good times

Made in collaboration with Swedish inventor Simone Giertz, The Flipper quite literally ‘flips’ your phone face down. But the way it works is pretty ingenious.

The point of the case is simple—it’s an anti-distraction device. So when you’re at your favourite bar with your best buddies, you’ll want to live in the moment as opposed to checking your social media feeds.

The Flipper features an actuating lever mechanism embedded in the back of the case. With the help of an AI-trained listening tool connected to the arm, the mechanism will flip your phone as soon as it hears the word “Cheers” said aloud.

For now, The Flipper is still in its prototype phase, but if you want your own anti-distraction device, good news, you already have one.

Just place your phone face-down. Yep, underwhelming, but it’s a good habit!
