Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is encouraging Malaysians to switch over to locally developed navigation app, TuJu, as a safer alternative to Waze over ongoing data security concerns related to the latter’s connections to Israel.
Developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), TuJu was proposed as an alternative to safeguard Malaysians against what the government sees as a potential risk over Waze’s monitoring of citizens’ movements. It’s pertinent in the current times, since the Waze app falls under Israeli jurisdiction.
Cyber threats are evolving and Malaysia needs to adapt
Anwar brought up the TuJu app while chairing the third meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) on 20 October, where other matters regarding Malaysia’s preparedness and digital sovereignty were also discussed.
“Also discussed were the implementation of the Cyber Security Act 2024, the security of MyDigital ID, preparations to counter threats from quantum computing through post-quantum cryptography (PQC), emerging threats involving autonomous artificial intelligence, and the protection of National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII),” he said.
“We cannot compromise when it comes to the security of our citizens’ data and identities. Therefore, the government is strengthening an integrated identity ecosystem utilising MyKad as a physical credential and MyDigital ID for digital transactions supported by more robust cyber protections, including preparations for future threats via PQC.”

Aside from offering conventional navigation features, the TuJu app also lets users access highway cameras, calculate toll charges on their route, get info on nearby R&Rs, as well as report any damage or accidents on highways.
It’s currently available for download on both iOS and Android.
