Perodua has finally plugged into the electric future, and it’s doing so in a big (and slightly controversial) way with the launch of its first-ever EV, the QV-E (Quest for Visionary Electric Vehicle).

Priced at RM80,000 for the car alone (insurance and battery excluded), it’s a significant moment for Perodua; one that introduces a new kind of ownership model.

The numbers are surprisingly punchy

Powering the QV-E is a 52.5kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery that delivers up to 445km of range, depending on how heavy your right foot is and how kind the traffic gods are feeling.

The car delivers a rather spritely 204 horsepower and 285Nm of torque, making the QV-E the fastest-accelerating and most powerful Perodua ever built.

If you put it in Sport Mode, the QV-E sprints from 0-100km/h in just 7.5 seconds. Definitely not supercar numbers, but quick enough to dethrone the Myvi as “King of the Road”, we reckon.

DC fast-charging takes the battery from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes, while an overnight home AC charge will top it up from zero in about eight hours. That’s a practical sweet spot for daily commuters.

On the inside, the infotainment system features a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other quality of life features include a wireless charging pad, a driving video recorder, and a Child Presence Detection system.

But as the headline of this story suggests, there’s a big catch: you have to subscribe to Perodua’s Battery as a Service (BaaS) scheme. That’s RM275 per month on top of your existing car instalment. This means you don’t actually own the battery, Perodua does.

The benefits of this scheme include not having to worry about battery degradation, since you’ll technically be getting a lifetime warranty for it. But at the same time, you’ll be stuck with a long-term financial commitment that might seem a little unnecessary for a car.

Whether that will work out well for you or not totally depends on how committed you are to keeping the car before purchasing another one (if ever). For now, it’s pretty exciting to see Perodua branching out into a new space.
