The Indonesian music realm has always been flooded with poetic lyrics and powerful instrumentals.

While the older generation cried to Sheila On 7’s Berhenti Berharap in the early 2000s, Gen-Z is carrying on the moody music legacy with a whole new batch of artistes.

Among the newcomers is Nadin Amizah, a 23-year-old singer and songwriter from Bandung, West Jawa, with a melancholic voice that will make even the toughest of us cry.

A sad yet peaceful discography that perfectly captures the raw emotions of stepping into adulthood

Released at the beginning of the pandemic, Beranjak Dewasa was the tune that helped Indonesians and Malaysians cope with one of the most difficult years in history.

Nadin paints a familiar scene at the start of the song, where two innocent people become friends and quickly form an unbreakable bond.

They laugh in a carefree manner, spending the night entertaining each other and finding amusement in life’s most absurd obstacles.

But then the chorus arrives, and listeners are reminded that friendship doesn’t always last forever.

“Kita beranjak dewasa, jauh terburu seharusnya. Bagai bintang yang jatuh, jauh terburu waktu,” she sings desperately.

In the end, the two part ways, and Nadin prays that her former friend will remember her name without hatred.

“Mati lebih cepat, mati lebih cepat,” she repeats at the end of the chorus, implying that they are growing older quickly and that it is pointless to harbour grudges between them.

The agony of being perceived as the insane woman in a relationship

While Nadin discussed a failed friendship in Beranjak Dewasa, she revealed a different side of herself in Rayuan Perempuan Gila, highlighting the difficulties she had to face while in a relationship.

In this story, Nadin plays the role of a woman who constantly asks her partner how much they love her to feed her anxiety.

But she doesn’t stop there. Nadin proceeds to push her lover further by asking if they would love her for a long time and what makes them fall in love with her in the first place.

As the track’s title suggests, you might think her actions are insane and unnecessary, until Nadin zooms out and reveals the reason for those never-ending questions.

Her anxiety stemmed from her insecurity as a woman who was abandoned by every person she was romantically involved with.

Nadin, however, is aware that her insecurity is causing her to constantly be portrayed as the perempuan gila (crazy woman), and she says that she is doing everything she can to be a better person.

“Memang tidak mudah mencintai diri ini. Namun, aku berjanji akan mereda seperti semestinya,” she sings in the final verse of the track.

Nadin is definitely a mastermind when it comes to songwriting and expressing her raw emotions

In 2019, she won the Best Newcomer award at Anugerah Musik Indonesia, solidifying her place in the music industry.
