M’sian Woman Wins Multiple Scholarships to Two Prestigious Australian Universities
At just 23 years old, Ong Sze Ning, or Summer as she’s known to friends, made history by becoming the first Malaysian to be awarded the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Vice-Chancellor’s International Postgraduate Coursework Scholarship.
It seems like Summer’s hard work and dedication really paid off as she was also awarded the University of New South Wales (UNSW) International Scientia Coursework Scholarship.
Recently, The Star interviewed Summer and reported on her rollercoaster journey of applying for said scholarships, constantly facing doubts and setbacks before ultimately achieving her dream.
Summer’s amazing academic journey began when she chose to study at INTI International University in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, away from her family in Kuala Lumpur to build her independence.
She obtained a bursary from the university to pursue her Diploma in Mass Communication, graduating with a distinction and subsequently being awarded a merit scholarship to pursue her Bachelor of Mass Communication (Hons) (Broadcasting) at Taylor’s University.
Throughout her studies, Summer sought out extracurricular activities, community projects, internships, and part-time employment opportunities, developing a wide range of skills and experiences.
Her dedication to being an all-rounder paid off when she was awarded the prestigious aforementioned scholarships, allowing her to pursue a Master of Marketing course at UTS.
Her advice to students looking to secure a scholarship is to work hard for their grades while also putting themselves out there to gain as many experiences as possible whether it be community service, work experiences or extracurricular activities.
Summer’s story is not only one of academic achievement but also of resilience, determination, and a willingness to step out one’s comfort zone.
Her journey should serve as an inspiration to others who may be facing similar challenges in pursuing their dreams. Congrats Summer! 👩🎓💐
