For the love of delicious fried chicken, two friends started experimenting with fried chicken recipes during the pandemic which led to the birth of FOWLBOYS – some of the tastiest Southern-style fried chicken sandwiches this side of the Klang Valley.

Johann Razali, 27, and Shafiq Saiful Aznir, 31, started the project with RM1,000 from the R&D stage until the day of the launch and treated it as a side hustle that wouldn’t really make them money.

“It took us three months before we were happy with our buttermilk chicken recipe. However, Johann’s expertise with home cooking was a big advantage,” says Shafiq, who looks after FOWLBOY’s branding and marketing.

They started out from their apartments, which is easier and more cost-effective. Admittedly, both of them didn’t have any culinary background and spent months learning before going forward.

Starting just one chicken sandwich, the Motherclucker and Batter Up (their version of chicken and waffles), FOWLBOYS improved on the flavours and launched two new sandwiches – The O.G. and Motherclucker 2.0, their bestsellers til this day.

The shining star of their sandwiches apart from the buttermilk marinade, is the Fowl Jam, a mix of local and imported peppers that gives it a kick of spicy and sweet.

This March marks FOWLBOYS’ first anniversary, and they say the success is thanks to strong support from friends and the power of word of mouth on social media that help the brand gain more traction.

Without a physical outlet at the moment, delivery is limited to Klang Valley although they have plans to open their first, standalone, hole-in-the-wall in Subang Jaya sometime this year and expand the business.
