Last Saturday (Nov 5), Datuk Pang Chin Hin, founder of legendary childhood snack essential – Mamee Monster, passed away at the age of 96 sometime around 6:03 am.

Before venturing into food manufacturing in 1971, Pang worked as a used-car salesman. It wasn’t until 1977 where he would open up a small instant-noodle factory in Malacca, sowing the seeds for Mamee to grow into the company it is today.

Inspiration for the beloved snack first struck in 1974 when Pang’s son, Tee Chew, observed rubber tappers eating uncooked instant noodles straight from the packet which gave him the idea of selling pre-cooked instant noodles with flavouring added aka:

As for their brand name ‘Mamee’, the company said that it originated from the word ‘mummy’, to represent the strong connection a person has with their mother.

In a separate interview done by Tech Asia, Tee Chew explained that “I always asked for double portion, so I’ll say in Cantonese: ‘ma-mee’. And we thought, hey, that’s actually a good name!”

Beyond the famous Mamee Monster noodle snack, the company has also expanded, producing over 50 different products including Double Decker back in 1980 and Mister Potato in 1992.

We’re pretty certain the majority of you grew up on either of the snacks pictured above. Mamee’s cemented in our childhoods for sure, but did you know that beyond the blue monster lies a slew of awards?

Mamee Monster took the crown in 2014 at the Frost & Sullivan Award for Best Home-Grown Packages Food Company, and also a Putra Brand Award under the Foodstuff Category for being listed as one of the top 10 best instant noodles in the world.

Datuk Pang himself was awarded the Putra Brand Personality Award in 2016 while Mamee-Double Decker was named one of “Malaysia’s Best Managed Companies” by Deloitte earlier this year (2022).

Since Pang’s passing, his son Pang Tee Chew, who serves as the CEO and director of Mamee-Double Decker Sdn. Bhd. will continue his legacy, while Pang’s grandson Pierre Pang will assume the position of Group CEO.

Our condolences go out to the Pang family and we here at JUICE wish to thank the late Datuk Pang for making our childhoods (and current lives) a whole lot tastier!
