In a unique fusion of cryptocurrency and investigative journalism, a new meme coin dubbed $JHOLOW has hit the digital market, aiming to crowdsource information on the elusive financier, Low Taek Jho—better known as Jho Low—the alleged mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal.

Launched by a coalition of crypto enthusiasts and investigative journalists, $JHOLOW seeks to incentivise the global community to unearth credible leads on Jho Low’s whereabouts.

The $JHOLOW initiative is a modern manhunt of sorts

Bradley Hope, co-author of Billion Dollar Whale, which delves into the intricacies of the 1MDB scandal, is a prominent figure behind the initiative.

Hope describes $JHOLOW as a community-driven initiative, likening it to “turning the everyone-loves-a-mystery ethos into a crowdsourced detective agency, powered by crypto rewards.”

“This is a grand experiment in participatory journalism. We’re testing whether a coin’s value can be driven not just by speculation, but by the value of information it helps uncover,” Hope said.

The way it works is simple in nature. The $JHOLOW platform operates on a bounty system where individuals can submit tips related to Jho Low’s location, assets, or financial networks. Submissions are meticulously vetted by a team of moderators to ensure credibility and legality.

This means tips that use illegal information-gathering techniques (like hacking into a computer) won’t be accepted. Verified information is rewarded with $JHOLOW tokens, with bounty amounts varying based on the value of the information provided.

Some context on Jho Low, in case you need a refresher

Jho Low has been a fugitive (and on the run) for over a decade, with allegations of orchestrating the misappropriation of approximately US$4.5 billion, nearly RM20 billion, from 1MDB. Despite charges in Malaysia and the United States, his exact whereabouts remain a mystery.

The fugitive fraudster has been reportedly sighted in China, Macau, and the Middle East. He was also rumoured to have been placed under house arrest in Shanghai, China, according to Hope.

Despite all the possible leads, law enforcement agencies across the world have struggled to find him. This is partly the reason initiatives like $JHOLOW exist.

Whether this approach will lead to Jho Low’s capture remains uncertain, but it undeniably showcases the ingenuity of technology and decentralised finance (DeFi) in a justice setting.

Disclaimer: Meme coins, such as $JHOLOW, are cryptocurrencies that often rely on community engagement and viral trends rather than actual financial value. They’re hyper-speculative and ultra-volatile, which may pose risks to participants.
