Heineken Green Room 2013: Of Drums & Not-So-Extinct Dinosaurs
LINEUP
The Drums
JUICE’s fondest memory of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival ’11 was dancing to The Drums’ ‘Money’. This Brooklyn band eschews the Americana they grew up with for a sound that falls somewhere in between reverb drenched surf pop and ‘80s britrock, think Joy Division, The Cure, The Smiths, and even ‘60s girl group The Shangri-Las. Portomento, their sophomore album, has danceable singles in spades beyond just the one that gave us the best Laneway moment.
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (DJ Set)
On the electronic side of things is Orlando Higginbottom (how’s that for a painfully British name?) aka Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (TEED). As TEED, Orlando came out of nowhere in 2012, soaring high in the dance circuit as something of indie electronic demigod. Highly anticipated after his hit single ‘Household Goods’ in 2010, his debut Trouble came out in 2012 to much critical acclaim, making into numerous yearend Top 10 lists. TEED has a developing rep as a performer with an audiovisual approach to performance, a perfect fit for Green Room’s multi-media nature.

Twilight Actiongirl
The boys of Twilight Actiongirl (TAG) have reached a full decade of providing KLites with tunes you wouldn’t expect in a club. Much like Zouk Club KL, where they are residing for years now, TAG was practically a rite of passage for every nightlife punter in their late 20s and early 30s. Much has been said about how legendary their Loft days were, but that’s discrediting their ability to still throw a kickass party. This Heineken Green Room, TAG is set to show newbies just exactly what their seniors were talking about when they wax lyrical about the good ol’ days. Expect indie tunes with an electronic edge and a dose of Malaysiana.

The Deer Society
Something of a successor to Twilight Actiongirl, The Deer Society brought a jolt of youthful irreverence and rebellion back to KL nightlife when they started their night at Daikanyama. Every Saturday night saw the venue packed to the brims with youngins looking for a good time, and it wasn’t unexpected to see a few smashed glasses after the party ended. Currently residents of The Establishment, ASquared, Ruud, and Robotron 5000 are still going strong. Like TAG and Heineken, they’ve extended themselves to playing opinion leaders, having had events featuring international DJs and new local bands.
Darren Ashley
One of JUICE’s new acts to look out for last year, Darren Ashley has since proven that we are indeed hip soothsayers – this boy has had an extensive list of gigs. Playing at everywhere from Urbanscapes to 8tv’s Shout! Awards, he’s indubitably KL’s most prominent rising talents right now. Straddling the line of musicianship and dance, Darren will bring a solo electronic set that is aided with vocals and live button-pushing trickery.
