CASIO and Malaysian fashion label AGAINST LAB. have collaborated for the second time to reimagine the watch brand’s iconic G-SHOCK DW-5600 model with some added ’80s flair — inspired by cassette tapes, of course.

Dubbed “The Universal Language”, the G-SHOCK DW-5600AL24 is a Southeast Asia exclusive, being available in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines only.

The quintessential G-SHOCK

The DW-5600 model has the same DNA as the very first G-SHOCK released in the 1980s, featuring a rugged and boxy design that gives the watch its iconic look and mass appeal.

This special collaboration model takes inspiration from what the two brands call “The Universal Language that connects us all”, which is music! More specifically, it pays homage to the era of cassette tapes from the 1970s to the 1990s. Cassettes were the medium of choice for music lovers, so they naturally played a significant role in shaping the music scene at the time.

Add the G-SHOCK’s retro aesthetic to AGAINST LAB.’s deep influence from hip-hop culture, and you’ve got a winning design that’s sure to win hearts and break necks.

Featuring a design language inspired by cassette tape components, the G-SHOCK DW-5600AL24 has a predominantly matte white base with circular elements that tastefully add neon pops of colour. There’s also a subtle AGAINST LAB. logo printed on the band, made to look like the font typewriters used back then — something you’d see on the labels of cassette tapes too. The watch band’s loop also features a ‘side’ indication (in this case, ‘A-SIDE’) for extra nostalgia points.

On the watch face, you’ll find an ‘AGAINST’ logo in bright pink, accompanied by a unique LED-backlit motif representing a sound wave graph. As for finishing touches, there’s an AGAINST LAB. ‘A’ logo engraved on the case back for stylish simplicity.

Of course, like the G-SHOCK watches you know and love, the DW-5600AL24 will be able to handle all of life’s hurdles, thanks to 200-metre water resistance, a shock-resistant build, and other creature comforts like a stopwatch, a countdown timer, a multi-function alarm, electro-luminescent backlighting, and a fully automatic calendar function.
