They say money can’t buy happiness. But for those with extremely deep pockets, it can definitely help slow down ageing.

Tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, who rose to internet fame for spending US$2 million per year on longevity treatments, now says he’s been diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis (AIG).

“My stomach is eating itself.”

Johnson has publicly stated that he hopes to live until the year 2140, which probably sounds like a highly ambitious idea considering the limitations of today’s health advancements.

But on 2 July, the 48-year-old revealed his AIG diagnosis on Instagram, telling followers that he discovered the condition back in May after a series of medical tests related to his iron deficiency.

Despite maintaining a strict diet, doing regular exercise, and even trying experimental treatments (like injecting his own son’s plasma), Johnson now has to face a chronic illness.

But he remains optimistic, pledging to do all he can to fight the disease. And considering the wealth he has, nothing will be truly out of reach for him. He already has his own team of more than 30 doctors performing regular medical tests.

Johnson shared that he enjoyed eating sugary cereal, soft drinks, and fast food as a kid. As a young father of three who was still in the midst of building a business, he “fell into a deep chronic depression” before his body started developing AIG.

AIG is a chronic autoimmune disease that makes the body’s immune system fight the stomach lining. This then leads to iron and Vitamin B12 deficiencies. If left untreated, it could dramatically raise the risk of gastric cancer.
