YouTuber Confronts One of Japan’s Infamous ‘Bumping’ Men

Japanese people are often associated with being polite, even at their own expense sometimes.

While that perception still rings true, a worrying trend among men (and some women) has emerged, where they take their stress out on unsuspecting passersby with an aggressive shoulder-check, especially in confined or crowded spaces.

One man in Osaka thought he could get away with that too, and with recent video by Korean YouTuber MadBros, it seems he might have for the most part. That is, until the YouTuber himself confronted the man, known to Japanese people as a butsukari otoko or “bumping man”.

A lesson hopefully learned

Kang (stagename: Yuk Eun Young) is a self-proclaimed “dark behaviour correction expert”, which basically means he teaches rude individuals a lesson if they ever cross him on the street. He doesn’t mince words, often using his big physical build to intimidate wrongdoers.

He also helps individuals in need, as seen in the video featuring the bumping man, in which he helps a woman get on her feet after finding her slumped on the ground.

At around the 8-minute-4-second mark, we see a bumping man intentionally shoulder-checking almost a dozen individuals in a busy street in Osaka. Noticing this rude and aggressive behaviour, Kang decides to follow the man, eventually overtaking him in an attempt to block the man’s path.

After shoulder-checking Kang, the man walks off. But of course, he just messed with the wrong guy.

Kang then stops the man, confronting him about his offending behaviour. He also repeatedly bumps the man’s shoulder in an effort to demonstrate his unwarranted aggression towards passersby due to the language barrier. What does the bumping man do? Cower and say “sorry” repeatedly.

This sparks a more important question: Why do bumping men or butsukari otoko even exist? The fact that there’s a term for them means it’s quite a rampant problem in Japanese society.

According to various reports, butsukari otoko are usually middle-aged men who are incredibly stressed out about their own lives and have no way of addressing it. They resort to aggressively bumping into people on the street, especially targeting smaller women and children.

Some even use it as an insidious form of sexual harrassment, with the aim of grazing their shoulders on women’s breasts.

This disturbing trend isn’t exclusive to men, though. Women have also been filmed committing the same act, more often on other women and unsuspecting children standing in their way.

If you’re travelling to Japan soon, be aware of your surroundings. If you see a suspected bumping man headed your way, you can either get out of the way or stiffen your shoulders if you’re feeling more confrontational (and don’t want to give them the satisfaction).
