For the past few years, Datuk Seri Aliff Syukri has been a trending name whenever Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches, often due to his controversial and flamboyant (read: overly fruity) music videos.

His annual festive releases have sparked debates, with many criticising his unconventional approaches to celebrating the occasion.

In April 2024, he made headlines once again when his ‘Kelepok Raya‘ teaser music video was met with intense backlash. The teaser, which was uploaded on YouTube, featured Aliff and his dancers performing in tight-fitting baju melayu that closely resembled skinsuits, alongside what many deemed as “explicit” dance moves.

Within minutes, the video went viral, with netizens expressing their shock and disapproval over the content, stating that it was inappropriate for a festive song meant to celebrate the holy month.

The backlash was so intense that the final version of the ‘Kelepok Raya’ music video was never officially released, and Aliff Syukri was called in for questioning by both the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), reported SAYS.

Despite being known for such gimmicks and publicity stunts, Aliff took a noticeably different approach for his 2025 Raya musical project

This year, he collaborated with popular local singer Iman Troye for his latest music video, ‘Raya ya ya’

Unlike his previous works, the video carries a wholesome and lighthearted narrative, portraying Aliff and Iman as bickering siblings who ultimately learn to set aside their differences and embrace the spirit of forgiveness during Hari Raya.

Additionally, the production of the 2025 video showcases significant improvements in multiple aspects. Compared to his previous releases, ‘Raya ya ya’ features better vocal arrangements, enhanced choreography, and a more polished overall execution.

Gone are the flashy and controversial skinsuits—this time, Aliff and Iman opted for traditional attire, donning classic baju melayu and baju kurung that are more culturally appropriate for the occasion.

The video received positive comments and has garnered over 700,000 views in just 10 days

“Now this is a good MV, appropriate clothing; even if you don’t have a nice singing voice, it is still acceptable. This is how you do it; we wouldn’t mind if Datuk wants to put out Raya songs every year after this, as long as the MV is like this,” commented one user.

“I feel so touched seeing Aliff Syukri singing a normal version of a Raya song,” said another.

“I’ve commented, ‘Why can’t Datuk Aliff make normal Raya music videos?’ in the past, and finally, we’re here! It sounds good to the ears and appealing to the eyes,” wrote another.

With this new direction, Aliff Syukri appears to have taken public feedback into account, presenting a more refined and positive portrayal of Raya celebrations.

Whether this marks a permanent shift in his approach remains to be seen, but ‘Raya ya ya’ has certainly demonstrated a different side of the social media personality’s musical ventures.
