A politician running in the 2025 Namibia elections has made waves on social media, not for his political prowess or reputation, but for his unfortunate name: Adolf Hitler.
To be more precise, his full name is Adolf Hitler Uunona, but it’s no surpise that the first two parts of that name have garnered a lot of (probably unwanted) attention.
Projected to win over local voters, despite his name
The 59-year-old councillor and member of the ruling left-wing SWAPO party is currently dominating the race in northern Namibia’s Ompundja constituency, with voting polls having just closed on 26 November 2025.
If projections hold, Uunona is set to retain his seat for the second time. He previously won back in 2020, sweeping a staggering 85% of the vote. According to the Electoral Commission of Namibia, the final verdict will come when results are announced on 30 November.
Of course, to us readers beyond the borders of Namibia, it’s not his policies that we’re really focusing on. It’s his name, which directly contradicts the man’s gentle and soft-spoken manner.
Uunona has long been candid about how he ended up sharing his name with one of history’s darkest figures. To put it simply, his father just didn’t know any better at the time.
In a 2020 interview with German newspaper Bild, Uunona explains that his dad “probably didn’t understand what Adolf Hitler stood for. As a child, I saw it as a totally normal name.” But of course, the reality and historical weight of his name caught up with him as he grew older.
“Only as I grew up did I understand this man wanted to conquer the whole world. I have nothing to do with any of these things,” he added, drawing a firm line between his own life and the genocidal ideology tied to the name.
These days, Uunona navigates the situation with a practical mix of acceptance and distance. His wife simply calls him Adolf, while in public life, he drops the “Hitler” entirely. Despite the unfortunate nature of his name, he doesn’t have any plans to legally change it.
“It’s in all official documents. It’s too late for that,” he says.
