Molek FMKL Cops Propose KK Mart Outlets As 24H ‘Safety Points’

Ever been out on the streets alone in the middle of the night and suddenly felt like someone was trailing you? Kuala Lumpur police are proposing that KK Mart outlets be used as designated Go-To-Safety-Points (GTSP) for anyone needing assistance during emergencies.
They’re open 24 hours, after all, and have bright fluorescent lighting.
The proposal presents itself as an initiative to strengthen crime monitoring and prevention efforts in KL, considering the ubiquity of KK Mart outlets across the capital.
Feeling unsafe? Just head to the nearest KK Mart.
Roughly 700 KK Mart outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have been identified as viable GTSPs, according to city police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus. They all operate 24 hours a day, have bright lighting, and are equipped with CCTV.
“We see that KK Mart can be made a safety point for the surrounding community. At the same time, we will enhance cooperation in terms of patrolling and monitoring so that these premises become safe places for the public,” he said.
According to Fadil, police are also looking into the possibility of being granted access to KK Mart’s centralised CCTV system, which would allow them to monitor designated GTSPs more efficiently.
“The CCTV cameras are controlled at a central location. It will also benefit us if, in the future, we could mirror this footage directly to contingent headquarters,” he said.
KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan seems to be on board with the initiative, adding that sharing CCTV access with the police is something he’s open to.
