WUSS Embrace Life’s Unknowns in Fuzzy Indie-Rock Single ‘Where It Begins’

Some bands arrive with a manifesto, others with a shrug. WUSS (We Undercover Super Softy), an Indonesian indie-rock four-piece based in Malang, came together somewhere in between: almost by accident, yet with an intent that now feels inevitable.

Their new single, ‘Where It Begins’, is the opening crackle of what’s shaping up to be their first full-length album, a project that ties together fuzz-soaked riffs, communal singalongs, and the sheer unpredictability of life itself.

A pulse that dares you to stay still

WUSS isn’t made up of some fresh-faced newcomers still fumbling with their first chords.

They’re all seasoned players from the Indonesian underground: Brilyan Prathama (ex-Humi Dumi, Nonanoskins), guitarist and sonic tinkerer; Sabiella Maris (Closure, Masurai), who handles both guitar and vocals; bassist Rara Harumi; and drummer Rufa Hidayat (Remissa, Inheritors).

Collectively, they come from all walks of life, from soloists to start-up employees, coffee shop managers to visual jockeys—it all converges in a band that thrives on fuzz, overdrive, and a pulse that dares you to stay still.

Their sound is a satisfying mixture of sweetly sour melodies drenched in roaring distortion, with drum-lines that get your blood pumping. It’s the sort of noise that recalls early 2000s indie. If you like your guitars slightly fuzzy and your choruses loud, then WUSS will feel and sound very familiar.

‘Where It Begins’ is more than just an opening single for their first full-length album, it’s a thesis statement in a way. “Journey is a blind box, you never know…” they sing, opening with a line that feels both casual and quietly profound.

The song circles around life’s unpredictability: success, failure, joy, and despair all bundled up in the unknown. Yet, WUSS aren’t a bunch of nihilists. They focus more on acceptance: to welcome whatever life hurls your way and keep moving forward.

Not their first rodeo

The band’s debut EP, We Undercover Super Softy, found its way into the hands of an audience that responded with enthusiasm, enough to fuel bigger ambitions. Now they’ve got 13 tracks in the can, an album set for release this year, and plans for a tour that goes beyond their EP circuit.

But what’s oddly striking about WUSS is that they feel both rooted and restless in their sound. There’s a warmth to their mid-tempo jams, but also a spark that suggests bigger stages and bigger crowds.

For fans of fuzzed-out indie-rock, WUSS is worth keeping an eye on.
