‘Good Game’: Jakarta-Based Band Dissects Situationships In Latest Single

In an age when everyone’s chronically online, you’ll have definitely come across the term, “situationship.” Whether you’ve been in one yourself, or watched helplessly as a friend slowly spirals into despair, it’s never a pretty process to go through.

Honing in on this sense of intense longing and confusion is Jakarta-based electronic group I Talk Too Much When I’m Drunk (ITTMWID) with their latest single, ‘Good Game’.

An electronic elegy for the emotionally unavailable

‘Good Game’, which is ITTMWID’s second single, isn’t just a song. It’s a sharp and upbeat vignette of romantic ambiguity in the 2020s. Despite its sad subject, it’s a song filled with danceable irony and lots of lyrical bite.

The group—comprising Tan Sian Ling, Miguel Sanchez, Piyush Vishwajeet, Samji Rende, and Adit Margonda—initially debuted with the nuanced and melancholic ‘Front Door‘, which explores the quiet ache of disconnection.

But with their second single, the band dives deep into emotional limbo in the form of situationships. It’s something that defines many modern relationships today, especially with dating apps and the social need to put on airs.

“This is for everyone who’s ever been stuck in that grey zone between flirtation and real connection,” says keyboardist and co-writer Miguel Sanchez. “We wanted to capture that specific tension when you’re wondering: ‘Is this going somewhere?’ while knowing deep down it probably isn’t.”

‘Good Game’ thrives in this space. Its refrain is deceptively catchy, echoing the kind of logic we use to justify staying in relationships with no resolution. It’s about “breadcrumbing”, which is the act of stringing someone along with fleeting moments of affection, just enough to maintain their interest without offering genuine commitment.

Tan Sian Ling’s vocal delivery leans into this emotional uncertainty. Her whispered lines (“Look how I talk to you / Does it sound like I adore you?”) float over minimalist Afro house beats and flickering synth lines, embodying the hollow seduction of digital-era love.

“There’s something deliciously ironic about crafting a song about emotional unavailability while making it irresistibly catchy,” says producer, Adit Margonda. “The music seduces you exactly like the person described in the lyrics does.”

There’s a deeper philosophical thread running through the track

‘Good Game’ buzzes with frustrated energy. It’s the audio embodiment of late-night texting spirals, cryptic emojis, and the maddening dance of wanting more than what’s being offered. Still, ITTMWID doesn’t wallow in self-despair.

“We’re here to turn moments into magic,” the band declares. “Even the quiet ones.” Their upcoming debut album, I Love Too Much When I’m Drunk (out August 25), promises more of this.

Consider it the unofficial anthem for every situationship that never quite made it past the talking stage.
