How To Care for Senior Pets (and Love Every Minute of It)

It all happens so fast. One minute, your dog is running endless laps around the dinner table, or your cat is scaling your bookshelf like a daredevil. The next, they’re moving a little slower, sleeping a little longer. Just like that, your fur baby has become a senior.

But here’s the thing. Getting older doesn’t necessarily mean your pet’s best days are behind them. In fact, by just adding a little extra care and attention, their golden years can be some of the most beautiful and meaningful.

This stage of life isn’t about loss—it’s about comfort, connection, and slowing down together.

Here’s the JUICE guide to senior pet care.

1. Make home a safe haven

Like humans, your pets start to see the world around them differently as they age, both in a literal and figurative sense.

Their balance might be a little off and their vision might also be fading. What used to be a quick, effortless leap onto the couch or bed might require much more energy now. But there’s an easy fix in the form of gentle adjustments that you can make.

You can start by laying down non-slip rugs on floors where your pet’s paws tend to skid, and make sure those rugs are visually consistent (maybe a bold pattern) so your buddy’s old eyes can learn to recognise them better, and thus, see where they’re going.

If your home has stairs, it can be tricky for your pet to get around. A baby gate might help “teach” them not to use them, so as not to potentially injure themselves.

But if your pet likes to freely roam the outdoors, it’s worth checking if there are aggressive and stronger animals roaming around too. If there are, you might want to supervise your fur baby more.

Plus, their sense of direction might decline as they age, so it’s best to keep them as close as possible. Ideally, you shouldn’t start after they show signs of ageing. The earlier, the better—making their transition easier as they age.

2. Keep all your fur baby’s essentials within easy reach

The older a pet gets, the more important the simple things become. Food, water, a soft bed, their favourite toys.

The goal is to make these things easier to access. Non-slip bowls, litter boxes with low side walls or ramps. A comfy setup that doesn’t require your pet to traverse a lot of obstacles around the house. It’s best to keep everything nearby, in one cosy corner they know and trust.

And for the pets who used to leap onto windowsills or the back seat of the car, there’s nothing wrong with using a ramp. Just make sure it’s sturdy, grippy, and low-stress. The same applies for beds and couches—just get some soft, grippy pet stairs. Small effort, big payoff!

3. Keep them comfortable

Senior pets have to deal with a lot: arthritis, weaker muscles, hearing loss, even a little confusion. Yep, they’re just like us. But that doesn’t mean they’re done exploring or enjoying life. It just means comfort matters more than ever.

Start with the bed. Make sure it’s more than soft enough to ease delicate pressure points but low enough for easy entry. You can also add cosy blankets if you want. Place the bed somewhere quiet, maybe against a wall or in their favourite sunny spot away from foot traffic.

Temperature also matters as pets age. They become more sensitive to heat and cold, so try to keep their favourite hangout spots at a comfy, stable temperature.

And here’s something that might surprise a lot of senior pet owners: gentle movement is actually a good thing for your fur babies. Slow strolls or short play sessions keep their joints limber and their minds active. Just let them lead at their own pace.

Something important you should keep in mind

No one ever says taking care of senior pets is easy, ’cause it really isn’t. But it’s full of moments that will stay with you forever.

It’s slower walks, deeper eye contact, and the quiet kind of love that only comes from years of trust.

Of course, there will be a lot of trips to the vet, maybe some medication that you’ve gotta trick your pet into eating, and some health tracking here and there. But there will also be sunshine naps, head boops, and the warmth of knowing you’re making life better for your furry companion.

After all, they might have only been in your life for a short while, but you’ve been in their’s the entire time.

So take it easy. You don’t have to be perfect.

Just be present, kind, and willing to adapt for the sake of an old friend who still has so much love to give.
